First light over a deep valley in the Mnweni region of the northern Drakensberg

Itinerary

1

Arrival & transfer to the mountains

Fly from Cape Town to Bloemfontein, where we meet and drive together (about 6 hours) to the Mnweni Cultural Village Lodge. Settle in, meet the group, and rest up for the trail ahead.

2

Into the Mnweni valley

Our first day on foot — 14.5 km climbing steadily from the valley floor at 1,275 m up to 1,936 m as we leave the everyday world behind.

3

Up to the high escarpment

A demanding 11 km with almost 1,000 m of ascent, topping out near 2,900 m on the roof of the Drakensberg. Big effort, bigger views.

4

Along the roof of the Drakensberg

Around 16 km traversing the high escarpment near 2,900 m, past jagged peaks and ancient rock faces glowing gold in the afternoon light.

5

The long descent begins

A steep 6 km dropping more than 1,000 m off the escarpment toward the valleys — knees and trekking poles at the ready.

6

Back to the valley

Our final 15 km on the trail, winding down to 1,273 m and returning to the Mnweni Cultural Village Lodge for a hot meal and a proper bed.

7

Departure

Transfer back to Bloemfontein Airport and fly home to Cape Town, carrying five days of wild Drakensberg with you.

What to expect

The Drakensberg — uKhahlamba, 'the barrier of spears', in Zulu — is a dramatic mountain range stretching over 1,000 km along the border of South Africa and Lesotho. Much of it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protecting rare wildlife, ancient San rock art, and some of the finest hiking country in Africa.

Our route begins in the Mnweni valley, a rugged, rarely-visited corner of the northern Drakensberg beyond the main park. This is the land of the Amangwane people, and the gateway to genuinely wild terrain.

Over five days on foot we climb from the valley floor to the high escarpment, cross Rockeries Pass, camp beneath towering peaks, and watch the rock faces turn gold at sunset. We are led throughout by a certified mountain guide who designed this route himself along the most beautiful stretch of the Drakensberg — and with wilderness first-aid training, he keeps the group safe while the mountains do the rest.

This is not just a hike. It's a journey into wild South Africa.
